On A Roll: Reflections from the Wheelchair Dude with the Winning Attitude -- $22.50
As my co-workers were having babies and
proudly bringing them to the office, I envied the joy on their faces and
the profound changes that parenthood brought to their lives. I wanted
to be called “Dad.”
Terri’s doctor gave us a chart to monitor her ovulation. Back at
the office, I pulled a manila file out of my desk drawer and grabbed a
red Sharpie. On the label, I scribbled the following words:
“Greg Junior.”
There it was, facing me every day. A tangible folder with red ink
on the tab. That folder was the real fertilization of my baby, the phys-
ical connection that began as an idea. It stared at me every day as a
constant reminder that “Greg Junior” actually existed. Before he was
a fertilized egg, he was a folder. Before he was a folder, he was an idea
swimming around in my brain.
Two months later, we were back at the obstetrician’s office. It was
Halloween. A clown greeted us at the front desk. A witch took Terri’s
temperature and blood pressure. After a short wait, a cowboy reached
for his holster and fired a memorable shot. It was one of the most
amazing moments of my life.
“Congratulations,” he smiled. “You are going to be parents!”
