ON A ROLL is produced by Joanne Caputo, in association with the Independent Television Service, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. ON A ROLL will be broadcast on the PBS series, "Independent Lens."

"ON A ROLL: Family, Disability and The American Dream"

Greg Smith and his family bare all in this unflinching portrait of a 65-pound man striving for the American Dream. Fueled by discrimination, Smith created On A Roll Talk Radio on Life and Disabilities from his power wheelchair in 1992. The father of three travels the globe in a new civil rights movement, but finds his own nation’s capital inaccessible - a minor challenge compared to living independently and having safe intimate relationships with facilitated sex.

Joanne Caputo, Producer/Director

On A Roll is writer/director Joanne Caputo’s first documentary following her 1994 children’s video, Ballerina, Ballerina, recommended by Sesame St. Magazine and others. A magna cum laude graduate from the University of Pittsburgh (‘76, ‘81), Caputo taught school in urban African American communities before transitioning to television production, where she has worked for the past 20 years. Married and the mother of two teenage sons, Caputo is a recent breast cancer survivor with several documentaries in progress; she has also authored two non-fiction book manuscripts about enslaved African American mother, Margaret Garner.
