"The Strength Coach Radio Show airs Sunday evenings at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on the Radio America Network.

This Week's show - Aug. 8: Spencer HaywoodThe Strength Coach will converse with basketball legend Spencer Haywood about the triumphs and tragedies of his life. On the court, Haywood was so dominating that no one could guard him. He averaged more than 20 points per game in the first five seasons of his NBA career including 29.2 ppg in 1972-73. His tragedies include drug addiction, divorce from his supermodel wife Iman, and the erasure of his legacy as a pioneering leader for today's stars in the mold of LaBraun James and Kobe Bryant. Haywood had to take the NBA to court to be allowed entry into the league without waiting four years after his high school graduation. He will talk about his roots, growing up picking cotton in Mississippi and the strength he acquired from those foundations.

Unity logoIn America, the media is largely responsible for contributing diverse perspectives into our pool of knowledge. This week, I'm in Washington, D.C., attending "UNITY: Journalists of Color," a national conference representing 7,000 media professionals of color. UNITY is a strategic, national alliance comprised of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), and Native American Journalists Association (NAJA).

One of the greatest attributes of a winning coach is the ability to utilize the strengths of diverse team members. As an African American with a disability, I have an interesting perspective on the concept of diversity. When different perspectives are thrown into the knowledge pool, discussion, decision making and the implementation of winning strategies are easier to execute.
