Mississippians Need Your Help
A week ago, my boys and I returned to Ocean Springs, Miss., to restart our lives after Hurricane Katrina. Flying above the area was a sobering experience! We saw thousands of blue canvases across rooftops as far as the eye could see. Trees in forests were toppled over as if they were stepped on by giant feet. On the ground, the detail of the disaster is beyond what words can describe. You need to come here and help somebody to truly "get it."
When my son returned to school on Monday, his friends told him they didn't know if he lived or died. He learned that day that one of his friends, an active healthy child with a bright smile and athletic talent had drowned. There are so many friends we haven't heard from.
There is a battle here between determination and depression. I am amazed at the inner strength of my parents, who like so many people here did not have flood insurance and lost more than $250,000 of property. Every day Dad is sanding, painting, hauling, constructing. His task is daunting. He is 66 years old. His entire lifetime of work is in shambles, but he is determined to get things back as soon as possible. But it will be a long time. Mississippi needs your help.
