Mattie’s Mom
Jeni and Mattie Stepanek Mattie Stepanek was much more than just a cute poster child. In my Labor Day weekend interview with his mom, Jeni, you’ll discover that from his deathbed, at the age of 13, he whispered instructions to her about where to find journal entries that would supplement his final book, “Just Peace – A Message of Hope.” As a legacy, the book offers a collection of essays and e-mail correspondence between Mattie and Former President Jimmy Carter, as these two peacemakers work together to realize their vision of a peaceful world. The book also contains many photographs, along with selections of Mattie’s artwork and peace poetry. My interview with Jeni Stepanek is unique in that she and I are both wheelchair users with muscular dystrophy who will compare and contrast our views about life, children, hope and inspiration. We’ll talk about Jimmy Carter, Oprah Winfrey, September 11th, Larry King and of course, Jerry Lewis. Tune in for a very interesting program. Check here for a list of stations, or come back to our Web site on Sunday for an online archive.
