Diversify Your Passions
Baseball's Chicago Cubs versus basketball's Phoenix Suns? How could it be possible? I'll explain.

Inner strength can only be developed if there is a solid foundation from which your mental state can grow, through the combination of a diet of positive mental nourishment, staring down the barrel of a challenge, and remaining consistent in your resolve. Diet, Exercise and Discipline. But sometimes the things we're passionate about can either be positive influences in our lives or weaknesses, depending on how they're going. These things can be as seemingly insignificant as the sports teams we root for.

Everybody knows I'm a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. And everybody also knows that the Cubs, due to injuries (yeah that's one excuse!) are having a dismal year. I love the Cubs so much that I can't root for any other team, so now the most exciting baseball by far is my son's little league team. And when they're done, I'm doomed to have a long, hot, boring summer with no pennant race to pull me through.

However I am also a die-hard Phoenix Suns fan. I have a long, intimate history with the Suns organization that goes back to my college years at Arizona State. You can read all about that in my book, "On A Roll: Reflections from America's Wheelchair Dude with the Winning Attitude." The Suns have a legitimate chance to win the NBA championship this year. They are one of the final four teams alive in the playoffs and have a 1-0 lead over the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals! Now that's what I call positive mental nourishment. When I wake up in the morning, in addition to my career and family life as inspiration, I also have the Suns!

The moral of the story for me is that I'm thankful that I have multiple passions. I write. I speak. I broadcast. I'm a Cubs fan. I'm a Suns fan. Sometimes the writing goes well. Sometimes I get writer's block. Some days, my voice is strong and clear for the airwaves. Sometimes I'm raspy. Sometimes your team is in last place, but your other team is on the verge of a championship!

Diversify your passions and ride the ones that are going well as you build your inner strength.
