Richard Avdoian has used his 22 years of psychotherapy and professional speaking along with his observations as a man to define four characteristics of manhood that need to be evaluated. His insights can help us educate our boys on how to become the best men they can be.

Who/what contributed to your inner strength?
Faith in God, my parents, my Armenian background and many positive, talented, giving mentors have significantly contributed to my inner strength.

When in your life was your inner strength particularly tested and how did you deal with the incident?
When my wife Nancy faced two unforeseen life-threatening high-risk surgeries within six months, I focused on positive outcomes, surrounded myself with my loving family and friends, prayed with spiritual leaders and most importantly asked for what I needed.

What suggestions do you have to help people realize their capabilities?
“Don’t let the opinions of others define your belief in yourself.”
“Don’t let internal fears and self-doubts keep you stuck.”
“Don’t let the criticism from others derail you from your dreams.”
“The longer you relive your misfortunes, the more power they have to harm you.”
Quotes of Richard J. Avdoian

Why is it important to focus on inner strength?
A weak, underdeveloped core (inner strength) will only support an individual for a short time before the stressors, challenges and responsibilities of living life negatively affect the daily functioning of an individual.

What are your next goals and what positive thoughts or activities keep you striving toward your goals?
My next professional goal is to finish my two books and my personal goal is to lose 25 pounds by the end of 2006. To strive to complete these goals I have made a commitment to myself both verbally and in writing and created a master mind group of supportive colleagues to serve as coaches, cheerleaders and taskmasters to hold me accountable. Once again giving myself permission to ask for what I need.
